Iran Demands Sanctions Relief from Europe
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas was in Teheran Monday to meet with senior officials of the Islamic Republic in what was assessed by some analysts to be a last-ditch effort to save the JCPOA nuclear deal. The meeting came despite a terse statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday declaring that Iran’s ballistic missile program, about which Germany and other European countries have expressed grave concerns, is none of their business and therefore will not be a topic for discussion during any talks.

He added that he would be interested to hear from Maas what Germany and other European countries have done to help Iran overcome sanctions imposed by the US following last year’s withdrawal from the JCPOA, dropping broad hints that if Maas doesn’t have anything to show him than he wouldn’t be very interested in holding any further discussions with him.
