Iran Rails Against US, Threatens Escalated Aggression
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a fiery statement on Wednesday denouncing the recent US designation of the Islamist Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organization, saying "They wish to plot against our Sepah (the IRGC) ... it is in the front line of confronting enemies of our (1979 Islamic) revolution and has always defended the country...in spite of all the pressure over the past 40 years, Americans have failed to do a damn thing and their vicious move will bear no fruit." The clerical regime issued a separate statement declaring that it has designated the the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) as a terrorist organization and the US government as a sponsor of terror.

"America's decision to label the Guards as a terrorist group was the peak of stupidity and ignorance of the American leadership," parliament speaker Ali Larijani declared, while President Hassan Rouhani added that "I am telling you (American leaders), if you pressure us, we will mass-produce IR8 advanced centrifuges."

"I can assure the rest of the world that President Trump will continue to ratchet up the pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran so that their behavior will change," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday.

In related news, Egypt has withdrawn from the US-led Middle East Security Alliance (MESA) initiative which Washington had hoped to use to confront Iran. Other US allies in the region said they would try to convince Cairo to reconsider but did not hold out much hope for success.
