Iranian Leaders Vow to Sell Oil, Enrich Uranium Despite Sanctions
Iranian officials made a series of bellicose statements in recent days, declaring that the Islamic Republic will continue to sell its oil on the “grey market” despite US sanctions and also continue to develop its renegade nuclear program while insisting that it is continuing to abide by the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement. Meanwhile, US National Security Adviser John Bolton announced that an aircraft carrier and additional air force units have been ordered deployed to the Middle East as a warning against Iranian belligerence following recent threats to close the Straights of Hormuz to international shipping.

Bolton said the deployment had been ordered "In response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings (and) "to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force. The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime, but we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces."

Also this week, the US State Department issued approvals for the sale of up to $6 billion in military equipment and weapons to allies in the Middle East, including nearly $2.5 billion worth of air defense systems to Bahrain, another $2.73 billion worth of air defense systems and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of upgrades to US-built combat aircraft to the United Arab Emirates.

Meanwhile, the governments of the UK, France and Germany “expressed concern” about the US moves.
