US Gearing Up for Continued Confrontation with Iran
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer announced this week that the US and the United Arab Emirates have signed an agreement to upgrade defense and security ties in the face of increasing belligerence from Iran throughout the Middle East. However, the Trump Administration is also extending sanctions relief on Iran for its apparent compliance with the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement, while at the same time imposing new economic sanctions over the Islamic Republic’s repeated ballistic-missile tests in violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions.

Meanwhile, Iran is preparing for a presidential election on Friday, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei imploring voters to turn out in high numbers to overcome the negative feelings from what has been a highly contentious campaign. "In the election debates, some remarks were made that were unworthy of the Iranian nation. But the participation of the people will erase all of that," Khamenei said, adding that this would also “send a message” to the US and Israel.

IDF Set to Receive Network Capable “Smart Tanks”
Brig.- Gen. Baruch Matzliach, head of the Merkava Tank Directorate, spoke on Wednesday at the Second International Ground Warfare and Logistics Conference at Latrun, west of Jerusalem, declaring among other things that the IDF will soon have hundreds of new tanks and armored vehicles capable of ensuring dominance on the battlefield far into the future.  “We have to look at all these vehicles as a family which act like a team. The vehicles won’t be identical, but they will compliment each other,” he said. He added that the new vehicles will be semi-autonomous and incorporate “network technology” similar to what is increasingly available in civilian automobiles and household appliances.

Humans are “not capable of processing all the information when it comes to the disappearing enemy,” he said. “We understand that we need a real-task computer in the tank to fuse all the information together, to present it to the tank commander so he can be able to make only the most important decision... so he can really see and identify the target and analyze situation in order to make the decision to shoot or not.”
